The Walnut Grove community
is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the environment.

Walnut grove recognizes the importance of our surrounding natural environment’s health to our collective safety and wellbeing. Healthy marshes mean more hurricane protection, cleaner water, healthier flora and fauna, and a more beautiful world for us all to enjoy. The community is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the environment. Through the Walnut Grove Institute, neighborhood covenants, and through the engineering of the neighborhood utilities, Walnut Grove strives to be a force for good stewardship.

The storm drains of Walnut Grove will feature Lake Charles’ first residential Baffle Box. A Baffle Box is a sediment and pollutant trapping structure near the storm drain outflow into the estuary. Installing this structure reduces opportunity for potentially

tons of sediment and pollutants entering the estuary, where it can cause irreversible damage to the fragile ecosystem within. The neighborhood covenants possess firm guidelines for best management practices for home, lawn and garden construction and maintenance. These guidelines aim to reduce the community’s ecological footprint and keep our waterways clean and beautiful. The Walnut Grove Institute will be the neighborhood’s most ambitious environmental project. The Institute will conduct community education activities designed to teach people young and old alike about our unique ecosystem and how to be responsible stewards of the areas distinctive ecology. The Institute hopes to have long lasting effects on not just the Walnut Grove community but surrounding communities as well.

Walnut Grove rests in an area of transition, where upper woodlands give way to the salty marshes of Southwest Louisiana’s coast.  It is here that the fresh waters from the river and bayou mingle with the tidal sea water from the nearby Gulf.

The intent of all of these initiatives by Walnut Grove is to make Southwest Louisiana a safer, more beautiful place to live and grow. By proactive actions like the covenants, green engineering, and preservation through educational events and opportunities, we can help make Lake Charles the best place it can be.
